Search Generative Experience
Search Generative Experience (SGE) was the original name for Google's experimental AI-powered search, which graduated into the production AI Overviews and AI Mode features.
Search Generative Experience — usually shortened to SGE — was Google's labs-stage AI search product. It launched in 2023, ran as an opt-in experiment for nearly two years, then exited the labs program and was renamed.
What SGE became
- The everyday answer panel above blue links is now called AI Overviews
- The full conversational search surface is Google AI Mode
You will still see "SGE" in older articles, vendor pitches, and analytics blog posts. Treat it as a synonym for the current product family.
Why the rename matters
SGE was framed as an experiment — easy to dismiss. AI Overviews ship to ~48% of all Google searches by default. The branding change reflects a maturity shift: this is no longer optional infrastructure for organic visibility.
Optimizing for the modern surface
The optimization playbook is the same as for any retrieval-grounded AI surface: be crawlable, structured, authoritative, and topically deep. See AI Overview trigger for how to forecast which queries are affected.
