AI Overview trigger
An AI Overview trigger is a query characteristic that causes Google to generate an AI Overview answer at the top of the search results instead of (or in addition to) the standard blue links.
Google's AI Overviews do not appear on every search. Understanding what triggers them is core to forecasting which of your target keywords are at risk of zero-click capture.
Common trigger patterns
AI Overviews are more likely to fire when the query is:
- Informational ("how to fix a flat tire")
- Definitional ("what is generative engine optimization")
- Comparative ("X vs Y")
- List-seeking ("best laptops under $1000")
- Multi-part (compound questions that benefit from synthesis)
AI Overviews are less likely on:
- Transactional, navigational, or branded queries
- YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) queries in sensitive categories where Google is cautious
- Highly local intent
- Very freshness-dependent queries (breaking news)
Why triggers matter
When an AI Overview fires, the top-of-page real estate compresses. Even ranking #1 organically can mean drastically reduced clicks unless your domain is also one of the cited sources inside the Overview.
Practical playbook
- Map your target keywords by trigger likelihood
- For high-trigger queries, optimize for being cited inside the Overview, not just for the organic position
- For low-trigger queries, traditional SEO best practices still apply
- Monitor trigger rates monthly — they shift as Google tunes the feature
