The process of connecting AI model outputs to verifiable sources of information to ensure responses are factual rather than fabricated.
Grounding is the process of anchoring AI-generated responses in verifiable, real-world information. When an AI model is "grounded," its outputs are connected to specific data sources, documents, or web pages — reducing the risk of hallucination and improving factual accuracy.
How grounding works
Grounding typically involves one or more techniques:
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): The model searches external sources and uses retrieved content as context for generating responses. This is the primary grounding mechanism used by AI search platforms.
- Knowledge base integration: The model references a curated database of verified facts.
- Citation requirements: The model is instructed to only make claims it can attribute to specific sources.
- Confidence thresholds: The system suppresses responses when it cannot find sufficient supporting evidence.
Grounding in AI search platforms
Each major platform approaches grounding differently:
- Perplexity: Heavy emphasis on grounding — every claim is linked to a cited source
- Google AI Overviews: Grounded in Google's search index with inline citations
- ChatGPT Search: Grounds responses in real-time web search results
- Claude: Uses web search for grounding when available, otherwise relies on training data
Why grounding matters for GEO
Grounding is the mechanism that makes AI citations possible. When an AI engine grounds its response in your content:
- Your page is retrieved during the RAG step
- Your content influences the generated answer
- Your URL may be included as a citation
- Users can click through to your site
Without grounding, AI responses would rely entirely on parametric knowledge (training data), and there would be no way for current content to influence AI answers.
Limitations of grounding
Grounding reduces but does not eliminate hallucination. AI models can still:
- Misinterpret or misrepresent retrieved content
- Combine information from multiple sources inaccurately
- Generate plausible-sounding claims that are not fully supported by citations
- Cite sources that do not actually support the claims made
