Answer engine optimization

A subset of GEO focused on optimizing content to appear in direct answer formats provided by AI search engines.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI-powered search engines can extract and present it as a direct answer. While closely related to GEO, AEO specifically targets the question-answer format that many AI search tools use.

How AEO works

AI answer engines like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Google AI Overviews synthesize responses from multiple sources. AEO focuses on making your content the preferred source for these synthesized answers by:

  • Writing content in a clear question-answer format
  • Using structured data to mark up FAQ content
  • Providing concise, authoritative definitions and explanations
  • Including supporting data, statistics, and citations

AEO vs traditional featured snippets

While Google's featured snippets were an early form of answer optimization, AI answer engines go much further — they synthesize information from multiple sources, add context, and generate entirely new responses. This means AEO requires a different approach than simply targeting featured snippets.

Best practices for AEO

  1. Structure content around questions: Use clear headings that match common queries
  2. Provide definitive answers: Lead with the answer, then elaborate
  3. Cite sources: Include references and data that support your claims
  4. Use schema markup: Implement FAQPage, HowTo, and other relevant schemas
  5. Monitor AI responses: Track which queries trigger AI answers that mention your brand
